At the base of the Cozla hill in Piatra Neamt, the top floor of a recently built apartment block traces the premises of a dwelling on an entire level: 230m2 usable space with orientation on all sides presents a single given element: the concrete pillar and beam structure, that receives secondary metal beams in the larger open spaces. The project starts by establishing daily living needs and scenarios, together with the client. The major points are keeping the structure visible and keeping the living area on the back, encompassing the entire facade of the building, with complete orientation towards the hill. Next, we tried to set the other necessary spaces into independent areas, keeping a central, self-contained, appropriately proportioned transitional space.

In short, a central ‘pedestrian’ alley connects small internal ‘squares’ with different functions. The route directly connects the entrance space mirrored with an office to the living space. Along this transit area, access is made to the night area with bathrooms, dressing room, sleeping area, children's and guest areas with the same amenities. Finally, the living space is positioned transversely to the access direction with the delimitation of the kitchen, dining, living room functions made strictly by the position of the access to the space, the furniture pieces and the distance between them. A common, neutral, matt microcement floor strengthens the connection presented between all spaces. Having a lower free height, with the presence of the well-defined structure, another generating element closes the general visual relationship: the interior gable ceiling, with a perimeter groove, which leads you from the entrance to the living area.

The custom-made furniture preserves or draws new boundaries in the space in which it is inserted. The lighting objects accentuate the tectonic features present and punctually present the furnished or functional areas of the apartment. The entire “house” is automated and connected to a smart home system with solar panels that control the air conditioning, lighting, shutters, sound system, surveillance, access, etc. Even though this more complex project has a single “author”, I would like to strongly argue that the merit of a good implementation, execution and result belongs to all those involved and would not have been possible without the active participation of the clients, of all the teams of contractors with whom we collaborated and who made it possible to deliver the work at the highest possible level.
