In Vatra Luminoasa, one of the representative neighborhoods of Bucharest, the premise of a contemporary dwelling appears accompanied by the related needs and operating systems. The densification of the existing fabric requires a tailored response.
The general intention was to subordinate the power of the intervention on all levels, but at the same time to bring to light all the qualities that make this ensemble, respectively this duplex, a special case. The functionality of the spaces remained largely intact with a work area and technical spaces in the basement, the living area on the ground floor, and the night area on the next 2 levels. On each level we tried to free up as much space as possible through openings, without influencing the original scenario of the house too much.
At the same time, the volumetric solution of the attic continues the existing language in a contemporary manner and is shown by mirroring the initial slope of the roof. The slope, but also the connection set back from the limits of the construction, helped to balance the new with the existing. We tried as much as possible to have a “German” attitude in terms of correlating these volumes with the external dimension of the context. Helped by the withdrawal of the back terrace, the folded sheet metal finish, the volume becomes a protective accessory that continues the interwar language of the house, initiated by the red antenna, also preserved and restored. It is a new camouflage, which gives you an understanding, but does not let you fully discover it.
The exterior finishes are neutral, the details of differences in texture preserved around the windows, the corners, the only accents of color being all the metallic elements: the antenna, the round window with which we returned to the initial project of the house, the gate, the railing. The courtyard is cleaned, returned and offers a generous breathing space in the back.
